World War II scrapbook, 1943-1944.

The collection contains a scrapbook compiled by Lt. Com. A.J. Vance during his service on the USS Mississippi. The scrapbook includes 175 black and white photo prints of military personnel, civilians, scenery, city views, and buildings in ports in the Pacific. There are also published illustrations of action in the Aleutians, memos, telegrams, and mess tickets. The daily memos contain announcements to crewmembers including accounts of battles, casualties, and the ship's operations. The telegrams tell of Vance being invited to dinner on another ship. Also included in the collection are a xerographic copy of the scrapbook, and the original scrapbook cover.

Lieutenant Commander A.J. Vance, United States Naval Reserve, served on the USS Mississippi during World War II. Vance saw action in many parts of the Pacific, including the Japanese campaign against the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. The USS Mississippi (BB-41), nicknamed 'Ole Miss,' was a New Mexico class battleship commissioned in June of 1914 and launched in January of 1917.
